The Tangier to Sahara tour day by day

Day one takes you through the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen, where you visit the Ras el Ma spring and stroll the calm blue lanes of the medina, among craft shops and architecture shaped by Andalusian and Jewish heritage. On day two you pass Meknes, the holy town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun and the Roman ruins of Volubilis before reaching Fes, Morocco’s oldest imperial city, for a traditional Fassi dinner. Day three crosses the Middle Atlas via Ifrane, the “Little Switzerland” of Morocco, the cedar forests of Azrou and Midelt to Merzouga, the gateway to the Sahara: a sunset camel trek leads you to your luxury camp for dinner and a Berber folklore show.

From the Merzouga dunes to Marrakech

Wake early for sunrise over the dunes, then return to Merzouga for breakfast and a shower. Day four continues to the colourful souks of Rissani and the towering cliffs of the Todra Gorges, ending in the green Dades Valley for dinner and the night. On day five you visit Kasbah Amridil in Skoura, the old souks and famous film studios of Ouarzazate and the UNESCO-listed Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, before crossing the Tizi n’Tichka pass to Marrakech, the “Pearl of the South”.

The tour is entirely private: the vehicle, the driver and the pace are yours. Local guides accompany you in Chefchaouen, Fes and Ouarzazate, and fuel, tolls, monument entrance fees and local taxes are already included, as is the sunset camel ride in the Sahara. Buggy or quad rides in the dunes can be added as an option. The itinerary can be adapted to your interests, for example with more time in the desert or extra stops along the way.

Bring warm clothes for the night in the desert, even in summer, plus a scarf against the sand and sunglasses. Driving days are long but punctuated by photo, tea and lunch stops.
