Less famous than Asilah, Larache, Morocco, charms with its relaxed mood, Spanish heritage and Atlantic sunsets. Nearby, the ruins of Lixus tell three thousand years of history. Here is how to visit Larache in one day from Tangier.

Larache Morocco – Lixus archaeological site

Larache, Morocco: the town centre

Start at the former Plaza de España, now Liberation Square, framed by white-and-blue arcades from the protectorate era. Then enter the small medina through Bab el Khemis and walk to the Atlantic Balcony, a promenade above the ocean. Literature lovers will also visit the old Spanish cemetery, where the writer Jean Genet is buried.

The port and the beaches

Larache is a busy fishing port, so the restaurants serve very fresh fish. Across the estuary, the long Ras R’mel beach is one of the finest on the coast, ideal in summer.

Lixus, the city of the Garden of the Hesperides

A few kilometres north of town, the archaeological site of Lixus overlooks the Loukkos estuary. Founded by the Phoenicians and later Roman, the city is linked to the legend of Hercules and the Garden of the Hesperides. You can see temples, a theatre-amphitheatre and ancient fish-salting basins.
