Clinging to the Rif mountains, Chefchaouen is one of the most photographed towns in Morocco. Its blue-painted lanes, flower-filled doorways and peaceful mood charm every traveller. Here are the best things to do in Chefchaouen, step by step.

Things to do in Chefchaouen: Outa el Hammam square and the Kasbah
The heart of the medina is Outa el Hammam square, lined with cafés and overlooked by the octagonal minaret of the Great Mosque. Right next to it, the ochre-walled Kasbah has an Andalusian garden and a small museum; climb the tower for the view over the rooftops.
The blue lanes of the medina
Next, get lost in the lanes of the Andalusian quarter and Souika. Blue stairways, flower pots and carved doors make perfect photos. In addition, the shops sell wool weavings, soaps and local goat cheese.
Ras el Ma and the Spanish Mosque
At the eastern edge of the medina, the Ras el Ma spring feeds the old washhouses. From there, a path climbs in about thirty minutes to the Spanish Mosque, with a view over the whole town at sunset.
Our tips
- Come early to photograph the lanes without the crowds.
- Always ask before photographing residents.
- Wear good shoes: the medina is steep.
- Add the Akchour waterfalls if you stay two days.
How to get to Chefchaouen
From Tangier, the drive takes about 2 hours for 115 km. Our Tangier to Chefchaouen transfer costs €90 for 1 to 3 passengers, and our Chefchaouen day trip from Tangier includes the return trip in one day. For the next leg, read our guide Chefchaouen to Fes. The tourism board also presents the town on Visit Morocco. These rides are part of our transport in Tangier.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Chefchaouen blue?
Several explanations exist: a tradition from the Jewish community, a symbol of the sky, or protection against insects. Today residents repaint the walls regularly, which made the town famous.
How long should I stay in Chefchaouen?
One day is enough for the medina. A night there lets you enjoy quiet lanes in the morning and the sunset from the Spanish Mosque.
Can I combine Chefchaouen and Akchour?
Yes, the Akchour waterfalls are about 35 minutes to an hour away by road. Our day trip from Tangier covers both.
