Crossing the Strait by ferry and docking at Tanger Med? Unlike Tangier Ville port, it is not in the city centre: you still have some fifty kilometres to go. Here is how to get from Tanger Med to Tangier city centre easily, with or without a car.
Tanger Med or Tangier Ville: two different ports
The region has two passenger ports. Tangier Ville, below the medina, mainly receives fast ferries from Tarifa. Tanger Med, to the east on the Mediterranean coast, is one of the largest ports in Africa: it receives ferries from Algeciras, and from Barcelona, Sète or Genoa depending on the season. How to get from Tanger Med to Tangier
Outside the passenger terminal you have several options:
- Grand taxi: available outside the terminal, fare to be agreed before leaving, limited luggage space.
- Bus: a few services exist, but timetables do not always match ferry arrivals.
- Private transfer: a driver waits with your name, follows the real ferry time and takes you straight to your hotel.
The drive from Tanger Med to Tangier takes 50 minutes to an hour on the motorway or the more scenic coast road, which runs along the Mediterranean with views of Spain on clear days. With our Tanger Med port transfer, the price is fixed per vehicle and includes tolls and parking.
Formalities on arrival
Police formalities are often done on board during the crossing: go to the ship’s police office with your passport to get your entry stamp. If you travel with your own vehicle, allow time for customs at the port exit. Once outside, your driver waits at the pedestrian exit of the passenger terminal.
Beyond Tangier: Tetouan, Chefchaouen, Fes
From Tanger Med you do not have to go through Tangier. The port is ideally placed to head straight to Tetouan, Martil or Chefchaouen, and we also arrange long-distance transfers to Fes or Rabat.
