Nicknamed the “white dove”, Tetouan is one of the most authentic cities in northern Morocco. One hour from Tangier, it combines an Andalusian medina listed by UNESCO, a Spanish-era city centre and Mediterranean beaches. Here are the best things to do in Tetouan in one day.

The medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site
The Medina of Tétouan has been a World Heritage Site since 1997. Rebuilt by Andalusian refugees after the Reconquista, it is one of the most complete medinas in Morocco. Enter through Bab Okla, wander through the craftsmen’s souks and discover the zellige, leather and embroidery workshops. Then head for a rooftop to admire the white roofs.
Hassan II Square and the Spanish quarter
Just outside the medina, the large Hassan II Square is home to the royal palace, which you admire from outside. Right next to it starts the Ensanche, the district built during the Spanish protectorate. Its white façades, balconies and Mohammed V Avenue recall Andalusia: it is the perfect time for a coffee break.
Beaches around Tetouan
In summer, Martil and Cabo Negro, about fifteen minutes away, offer long Mediterranean beaches. They are perfect to end the day, especially with children.
