Our Rabat day trip from Tangier takes you to Morocco’s elegant capital, an imperial city listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. By motorway, Rabat is about 2.5 hours from Tangier: enough time for a private guided visit of its great monuments, its medina and its Atlantic Corniche, and to be back at your hotel the same evening without changing accommodation.
After pickup at your accommodation in Tangier, your driver takes the A1 motorway south and your local guide meets you in Rabat. The visit starts at the Hassan Tower esplanade, the unfinished 12th-century minaret, facing the Mausoleum of Mohammed V and its royal guard. You then reach the Kasbah of the Udayas, with its blue-and-white lanes, ocean views and the peaceful Andalusian Gardens overlooking the Bou Regreg estuary. After free time for lunch in a local restaurant, you drive past the Royal Palace, the symbol of Morocco’s modern monarchy, and stroll through the city centre, the medina and along the Corniche before heading back north.

You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with a professional driver, with bottled water on board and breaks whenever you need them. The pace is relaxed and suits families with children as well as seniors, and your guide adapts the commentary to your interests, from Almohad history to contemporary Moroccan life. On request, and if time allows, your guide can add the Chellah necropolis or a museum (entrance fees extra), and a short stop in Asilah can be arranged on the way back. UNESCO describes Rabat as a modern capital and historic city with a shared heritage, from its Almohad walls to its 20th-century new town.
Clothing covering shoulders and knees is recommended at the Mohammed V Mausoleum. Museum opening days vary, so tell us in advance if you would like to visit one. Our Rabat day trip from Tangier covers the Hassan Tower, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V and the Kasbah of the Udayas with its Andalusian Gardens, plus free time for lunch and a drive past the Royal Palace. Comfortable shoes help on the Kasbah’s cobbled lanes.
The Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art is a great option for art lovers: on request and if time allows, it can be added (entrance fee extra).
