From the southern tip of Spain, Africa looks close enough to touch. And it is: one hour by ferry. To visit Tangier from Tarifa is one of the most exotic trips you can take from Andalusia. Here is how to plan your day.

The ferry crossing from Tarifa to Tangier
Fast ferries link Tarifa port with Tangier Ville port, right in the city centre below the medina. The crossing takes about an hour. The two companies on the route, Baleària and AML, run several departures a day (FRS stopped serving it in May 2025). In bad weather, especially strong easterly winds, sailings can be cancelled, so keep some flexibility in your plans.
Entry rules to visit Tangier from Tarifa
- Passport: compulsory, an ID card is not enough.
- Visa: citizens of many countries, including the EU, UK and US, are exempt for short stays; check your situation.
- Entry stamp: often given on board at the ferry’s police office. Do not disembark without it.
- Time: since 20 September 2026 Morocco stays on GMT, so Spain is one hour ahead in winter and two hours ahead in summer; keep it in mind for your return ferry.
What to do in Tangier in one day
