Spending your holiday in Andalusia and want to cross the Strait? The first question is the passport for Tangier from Spain: do you need a passport or is an ID card enough? Here are the rules as of October 2026, by nationality. Always check your country’s official travel advice before leaving.

A passport for Tangier is required, even from Spain
To enter Morocco you need a valid passport; ID cards are not accepted. The French authorities say so explicitly, including for organised trips and groups, and the Spanish authorities state that the DNI does not allow entry to Morocco. Tourists from the European Union, the UK and the US do not need a visa for stays of under 90 days.
- Spain: passport valid for more than 6 months and for the whole stay.
- France: passport required, the ID card alone is not accepted.
- Italy: passport valid for the length of the stay.
- United Kingdom: passport valid for at least 3 months after arrival.
- United States: passport valid for at least 6 months on entry.
What about “ID card only” excursions?
Some online offers promise a trip to Tangier with just an ID card. That is not what the official sources say, and travellers report being refused. At BBK Tours we ask every traveller for a passport.
Passport for Tangier: children and minors
Each child needs their own passport. For a minor travelling without their parents, check with your country’s authorities which authorisations are needed.
Returning to Spain
Since 2026, non-EU travellers (UK, US…) are registered by the new European Entry/Exit System (EES) when they re-enter Spain at Tarifa or Algeciras, so allow a little more time at the port. ETIAS has not started yet.
