Morocco’s capital, Rabat is an elegant, green city, calmer than Casablanca or Marrakech. Its old town and new town are listed together as World Heritage. Here are the best things to do in Rabat in one day.

Hassan Tower and the Mohammed V Mausoleum
Start at the Hassan Tower esplanade, the unfinished minaret of a huge mosque begun in 1184. Its rows of columns face the Mohammed V Mausoleum, a masterpiece of marble and zellige where Kings Mohammed V and Hassan II rest. The mounted guards always impress visitors.
The Kasbah of the Udayas
Perched above the mouth of the Bouregreg, the Kasbah of the Udayas is Rabat’s most beautiful walk. White-and-blue lanes, an Andalusian garden and a Moorish café overlooking the ocean: allow at least an hour.
Chellah, the medina and the new town
- Chellah: a Marinid necropolis built on Roman ruins, home to nesting storks.
- The medina: quieter than Fes, ideal for buying rugs and slippers.
- The new town: avenues, the Jardin d’Essais and early 20th-century architecture.
The whole site is described on the official UNESCO page for Rabat.
How to visit Rabat from Tangier
The Al Boraq high-speed train links Tangier to Rabat in just over an hour. However, to visit several sites far apart, a private car is more practical: our Rabat day trip from Tangier includes transport and the main stops. You can also book a Tangier to Rabat transfer and continue to Casablanca: read our guide to the Hassan II Mosque visit. These trips are part of our transport in Tangier.
