Planning your stay and wondering how to get around by Tangier taxi? Between the city’s petit taxis, the grand taxis, the fixed airport fares and the arrival of Uber in summer 2026, there are plenty of options. Here is our local transport company’s guide to choosing the right taxi in Tangier, paying a fair price and knowing when a private driver makes more sense. Information checked in October 2026.

Petit taxi and grand taxi in Tangier: how they work
The petit taxi is the city taxi. It takes up to three passengers, only drives within the city limits and runs on a meter: just ask the driver to switch it on when you set off. In 2025 the local authorities confirmed a minimum fare of 7 dirhams by day; a higher rate applies in the evening. Drivers often pick up other passengers along the way.
The grand taxi is a larger car on fixed routes, including to the airport and nearby towns such as Asilah or Tetouan. It usually leaves when full, each passenger paying for a seat; you can also hire the whole car by paying for every seat. Agree on the price before you get in.
Tangier airport taxi: the official fares
At Ibn Battouta airport, taxis follow an official fare list published by ONDA: 100 dirhams by day (05:30 to 22:30) and 150 dirhams at night to the city centre, 120 / 180 dirhams to the train station and 300 / 450 dirhams to Tanger Med port. For every detail of that ride, read our guide Tangier airport to city centre.
Uber in Tangier since July 2026
Uber launched in Tangier on 1 July 2026 with UberX and UberXL, and rides can also be booked ahead in the app. It is handy for a ride across town, but Morocco has not yet set a legal framework for ride-hailing apps, and many online guides still wrongly say there is no Uber in Tangier.
Taxi or private driver in Tangier?
For a short hop between the medina and the new town, a petit taxi is hard to beat. A private driver in Tangier is more comfortable in several situations:
- Arriving by plane or ferry: your driver tracks your arrival and waits with a name sign, at a price agreed in advance. See our Tangier airport transfer and our guide Tanger Med to Tangier.
- Families and groups: a Vito or a Sprinter with room for luggage, for up to 17 passengers.
- A day of sightseeing: book the car by the hour or by the day and stop as often as you like.
- Day trips: Chefchaouen, Tetouan or Asilah and back, without changing taxis.
BBK Tours is neither a taxi nor a ride-hailing service: we are a licensed tourist transport company with recent vehicles and professional drivers.
Our tips for taking a taxi in Tangier
- Carry small change in dirhams: drivers rarely have change for large notes.
- In a petit taxi, check the meter is on; in a grand taxi, agree on the fare before leaving.
- Have the exact address of your hotel or riad written down or on your phone.
- The medina is pedestrian: the taxi drops you at one of its gates, such as the Grand Socco.
